A Gibson reflecting the charm and style of the South

The Southern Jumbo is renowned for its proficiency in belting out country rhythms or acoustic blues leads. Original examples are among the most prized World War II-era flat-tops in today’s vintage market, and the Southern Jumbo Original picks up where those classic models left off. Dating back to the 1940s, the Southern Jumbo shares the same proven foundation as the J-45™, but with more ornate appointments that give it a character and visual identity all its own. It now comes equipped with the Gibson-exclusive, custom-voiced Baggs™ HiFi DNA™ pickup system, delivering the guitar’s natural voice and every nuance of your playing with exceptional realism when amplified.

The Southern Jumbo Original features solid mahogany back and sides paired with a solid Sitka spruce top and traditional scalloped X-bracing. This classic round-shoulder construction gives the guitar the versatility to move comfortably between first-position rhythm work and picked blues leads. Multi-ply binding outlines both the top and back, while the gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish reinforces the vintage-inspired character of the model.

The mahogany neck has a comfortable SlimTaper™ profile and is joined to the body with a compound dovetail neck-to-body joint. It is fitted with a rosewood fretboard with a 12-inch radius, 20 standard frets, and mother-of-pearl split parallelogram inlays. Classic Southern Jumbo detailing continues with double-antiqued multi-ply binding, nickel open-back tuners, and a mother-of-pearl Gibson logo and crown on the headstock, giving the model a more ornate presentation than its J-45 stablemate.

The traditional belly-up rosewood bridge is fitted with a bone saddle and TUSQ® bridge pins, while a bone nut helps provide a solid, responsive feel. A 50s-style tortoise pickguard completes the classic look. Together, these appointments reflect the Southern Jumbo’s long-standing role as the more dressed-up counterpart to the J-45 while preserving the same practical, performance-focused foundation.

Inside, the Southern Jumbo Original is now equipped with the all-new Gibson-exclusive Baggs™ HiFi DNA™ pickup system. This active system uses two lightweight sensors mounted on the internal bridge plate. The sensors are matched with optimized individual preamps to deliver full-bodied, amplified acoustic tone that lets the guitar’s character and personality come through when amplified, with no impact on the unamplified tone. The Baggs™ HiFi DNA™ system offers comparable gain-before-feedback to an under-saddle pickup. The system also includes soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls that are quick and easy to access while playing, and all but invisible to your audience.

Equally at home with first-position chords, picked blues leads, and a wide range of acoustic styles, the Southern Jumbo Original combines the versatility of a classic Gibson round-shoulder acoustic with the ornate detailing that has distinguished the model for generations. It comes ready for the stage and studio in a Gibson hardshell case.
