After the Gibson SJ-200 was introduced in 1937, it quickly earned the nickname “the King of the Flat-Tops” due to its unmatched sound, grand physical size, remarkable projection, and majestic aesthetic. Early SJ-200 models were built with solid rosewood back and sides, which were later changed to maple in 1947. Because of the economic challenges following the Great Depression, relatively few rosewood-bodied SJ-200s were produced, making these pre-war models highly sought-after by collectors and driving their vintage market prices sky-high.
Now, Epiphone, in partnership with Gibson Custom, brings this vintage icon within reach for today’s players with the Pre-War SJ-200 Rosewood Reissue. Faithfully crafted with attention to period-accurate details, this guitar features solid rosewood back and sides paired with a thermally aged solid spruce top, reinforced with traditional scalloped X-bracing made from quarter-sawn spruce for rich projection, tonal clarity, and pre-aged resonance. Its two-piece maple neck with rosewood stringer is shaped with a Rounded D profile and set with a glued-in dovetail joint, delivering a stable, comfortable playing experience.
The bound ebony fretboard is adorned with elegant mother-of-pearl graduated crown inlays and includes 20 standard frets. The SJ-200-style pickguard showcases vintage-inspired graphics, while the ebony SJ-200 open two-bar Moustache™ bridge features mother-of-pearl inlays, bone bridge pins, and a compensated bone saddle for precise intonation. The Gibson “open book” headstock is decorated with a vintage Epiphone logo and Gibson Crown in aged mother-of-pearl, complete with a stinger and an Inspired by Gibson Custom Double Diamond logo etched on the rear. Gold-plated Grover Imperial tuners provide reliable, smooth tuning for all playing styles.
For modern performance needs, the Pre-War SJ-200 Rosewood Reissue comes equipped with an under-saddle L.R. Baggs™ VTC piezo pickup and active preamp, including soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls, making it stage- and studio-ready right out of the included Red Line-inspired hardshell case with Inspired by Gibson Custom graphics. This combination of vintage aesthetics and modern electronics ensures that players can enjoy the classic pre-war tone in contemporary settings.
