The Gibson SJ-200™ was introduced in 1937 and quickly became known as “the King of the Flat-Tops,” revered for its large body, rich tone, powerful projection, and striking stage presence. While the earliest models used rosewood, maple was adopted for the back and sides in 1947. Over the decades, the SJ-200 has been played by everyone from country crooners to rock legends, and vintage models remain highly prized among collectors. Epiphone, in partnership with Gibson Custom, now presents the 1957 SJ-200 Reissue, an Inspired by Gibson Custom recreation of the majestic 1957 Super Jumbo model, making this historic instrument more accessible for today’s guitarists.
The 1957 SJ-200 Reissue features all-solid construction, including a thermally aged solid Sitka spruce top reinforced with scalloped X-bracing, and solid figured maple back and sides. The guitar’s multi-ply top and back binding, two-piece flame maple neck with walnut stringer, and C-profile neck shape combine classic style with modern playability. The neck is joined to the body with a glued-in compound dovetail joint, ensuring solid stability and resonance.
The bound Indian rosewood fretboard is fitted with 20 standard frets and elegant mother-of-pearl graduated Crown inlays. The rosewood SJ-200 open two-bar Moustache™ bridge includes mother-of-pearl inlays, bone bridge pins, and a compensated bone saddle for precise intonation. The SJ-200-style pickguard features vintage-style engraved celluloid graphics, while the Gibson-style “open book” headstock displays the Epiphone logo and Gibson Crown in mother-of-pearl. On the Antique Natural model, the headstock rear includes a stinger, along with the Inspired by Gibson Custom Double Diamond logo etched into the back. Gold-plated tuning machines provide smooth, reliable tuning.
For modern performance needs, the 1957 SJ-200 Reissue comes equipped with an under-saddle L.R. Baggs™ Element Bronze VTC piezo pickup and active preamp, including soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls, making it stage- and studio-ready right out of the included Red Line-inspired hardshell case with Inspired by Gibson Custom graphics. This combination of vintage craftsmanship, premium materials, and modern electronics makes the Epiphone 1957 SJ-200 Reissue an exceptional choice for both collectors and active performers.
