Since the birth of the Les Paul in 1952, followed by the launch of the humbucker in 1955 and various Hollow & Semi-Hollow Body Shapes such as the ES-335, Gibson were revolutionising the guitar at a rapid rate.
However, in 1957 Gibson realised they needed to continue their innovation in the solid body market. This saw the launch of two of the most iconic solid body shapes, the Gibson Explorer & Gibson Flying V being released to the world in 1958. Both sporting an exotic African wood known as Korina, Gibson had undoubtedly done it again, but maybe a little before their time. It would be easy to think these guitars were designed in the 70s or 80s given their radical shapes and their popularity reaching the masses in more contemporary genres in those periods. In fact, in 1958 only 19 Explorers and 81 Flying V's were shipped in their creation year. This however doesn't change the fact that these now incredibly rare guitars have been held as some of the best ever produced, so of course when Gibson announced they were making Custom Shop recreations of the beloved '58 Korina models, the community jumped for joy.
These recreations have been relic'd in the newly announced Murphy Lab by Tom Murphy and his team to look, sound and feel as close to an original that has aged over the last 60+ years. If you have had the pleasure of playing a Murphy Lab, you would already know just what this means to these guitars. A Murphy Lab is a next level finishing on a Gibson that really has to be seen and felt to be believed.
With methodic attention to detail, the 1958 Korina Flying V & Explorer are some of Gibson's most accurate re-issues to date. The Gibson team even found the original 1958 cases for these guitars (which are even more rare than the original guitars themselves!) and 3D mapped them to be built exactly the same. This is the same technology they used to recreate the guitars from an original model. The whole process even took 2 years for Gibson to pull off correctly. That time and effort has not gone unnoticed and this product is truly a work of art.
